Her experiences as a journalist based in Latin American in the late 70's had a profound impact on her life's work. Our meeting will be at the same time and location we usually do! This months guest speaker is our Board Member Rick Ibarria on American Tyranny or Constitutional Resilience? Our Constitutional Democracy is holding strong against the authoritarian tendencies and proclivities of the current President of the United States. These have been well documented and have created broad-based, serious concern about the future of our democracy. Yet, to date these tendencies have been thwarted by Constitutional separation of powers and checks and balances, as well as by the constitutional/democratic norms which have evolved over 250 years. One of our Board Members, Rick Ibarria, will present a slide show highlighting the Constitutional reasons for concern based not only on the words and actions of our Chief Executive, but also on the support base backing him, and the societal reasons that have allowed this situation to arise in the first place. Nevertheless the continuing resilience of our system has held thus far, and with a non-surprising solution of civic engagement we can and will maintain and strengthen our democracy.
